This philosophy has become the key to my success in life. Early on, I spent a lot of time acquiring knowledge from classrooms and books. Only when I started learning by doing, my life turned around. Through this foundation, I hope many young folks get to learn this lesson early in their lives. As someone said, you do not learn to walk by rules of walking but by starting to walk, falling many times, getting up and trying again.

Aristotle said, “For the things we have to learn before we can do them, we learn by doing them.”

Timeline

2014

First Tinkerers’ Lab Takes Root

The IIT Bombay Class of 1975 envisioned a dedicated space to inspire creativity, ensure 24/7 access to resources, foster hands-on learning, and build a vibrant community among the students.

2018

Outreach and Development Phase

The Class of ’75 saw the need for innovation skills in engineering, driving the 2014 mission forward to establish more labs, partner with top HEIs, and establish meaningful collaborations. This shared vision also brought Invention Factory ® © to India at IIT Gandhinagar in the summer of 2018.

2019

Genesis of Maker Bhavan Foundation

In 2019, the MBF was established as a section 8 charity in the USA – home to many Class of ’75 members. MBF was created to operationalize and scale the initiative, acting as a transnational hub fostering innovation and nurturing emerging talent.

2021

Crafting the Blueprint

2014 started a focus on advancing core hardware competencies that require training and complementary soft skills to reach more students. MBF launched the Centre for Essential Skills and partnered with LEAP by IITMIC, to create a comprehensive framework designed to empower students, ensuring they excel in both technical prowess and real-world innovation.

2022

Innovation Skills & Expansion

MBF introduced the Vishwakarma Awards to add to our innovation skilling pillar recognizing creative engineering breakthroughs and technical excellence. This year also marked a pivotal expansion in our team, transitioning from just one CEO to a growing family of 3 dedicated professionals.

2024

Anchoring Our Depth

With our blueprint in place and an expanding team of 8, we scaled our reach to Tier II and III colleges. We signed MOUs with multiple institutions, paired TL with LEAP, and secured key industry partnerships to empower students with essential innovation resources.

2025

Scaling With Impact

2025 marked a year of deeper impact through collaboration and scale. Maker education entered mainstream STEM with 23 Tinkerers’ Labs and the landmark AICTE Project PRACTICE. The Vishwakarma Awards went international, drawing 3,000 student applicants. Global and local partnerships flourished — from the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability’s Global Sustainability Challenge to co-hosting the first Indian Academic Makerspace Summit with IIT Gandhinagar.
