Welcome to the May edition of our newsletter!

In previous editions of the newsletter, we have celebrated the entrepreneurial spark that has emerged from Tinkerers’ Lab (TL)—stories of breakthrough prototypes, startups, and the creativity of our community. In this edition, I would point out the powerful synergies being forged with industry that enrich the TL’s ecosystem.

Our latest TL opened is the new ALPHA Lab (Advanced Laboratory for Programming, Hardware, and Analytics) at NIE Mysore. This innovative addition to our usual design of the TL is likely to be the first of many purpose-built for advanced AI/ML exploration in partnership with Lenovo and Motorola. The ALPHA lab is Karnataka’s first twin-lab model combining High-Performance Computing and Electro-mechanical Prototyping. With this lab, we also have another first. We expect that a course will be developed with mentoring from the Industry whereby students undertake proof-of-concept projects that combine software, hardware, and data analytics for third and fourth year undergraduates.

Another such industry partnership is in the domain of robotics and factory automation. MBF has procuring 10 advanced 6-axis Cobotic arms at highly discounted prices from Addverb Technologies, each equipped with a 2-finger gripper that will be installed in a number of Tinkerers’ Labs. Addverb will provide projects and mentors to students teaching them how to use of these robotic arms. These robotic arms are a great learning tool to explore human-robot teamwork in manufacturing, logistics, and beyond.

We continue apace our work on expanding geographically as well. By the end of this year, we’re aiming to take Tinkerers’ Lab to 30 institutions across the country.
